How does the government try to control everybody?

I think that the government tries to control everbody by using the thought police, and the normal police that look into peoples windows. I think they do this so no wrong can be done in Oceania. By watching everyone nothing bad will ever happen. If someone even thinks of doing bad in the society they will be arrested for it. There is never any bad in Oceania. The government doesnt try to control everyone, they do.

Hayley: I agree that the government doesn't try to control everybody, they just do. However, I'd like you to think about all the different ways they intrude upon an individual's life. And what point or warning Orwell seems to be making with the novel.

Hayley, although you make a good point i disagree with your sentence "There is never any bad in Oceania". I believe that even though the people are very stricktly controled "bad" can go on. For example Winston has a diary and has been sleeping with Julia. Those are things that the government trys to control but these things do go on. I do not believe that bad things can be conpleatly eliminated from a society.

I agree with the fact that the government watches the people so that no bad can be done. However, i think that is what the government wants the society to think. They want people to believe that they are really preventing anything bad from happening by invading privacy and watching people 24/7. But really, who is doing the bad here? The government is hanging people just because of thier thoughts, they are arranging marriages, preventing love, and influencing feelings of hate at a telescreen.I wonder when the society will figure this out and if the government will be overthrown.

I like your idea of how the government is controlling this society to prevent bad things from happening. However, i think this is what the government wants the people to believe. If the society is believing that the government is keeping them safe, then there will be no rebellion. But really, who is causing the bad things happening? The government is hanging people for thier thoughts and using it as entertainment. I wonder if the society is going to figure this out and overthrow Big Brother.

Hayley…
In your post you said that "There is never any bad in Oceania". I agree with your logic from the book because the thought police do try to intimidate people into doing no wrong, but from what we have read so far, people are trying to evade the thought police and face the consequences later on. For example, the main character is writing in his diary which in the party is wrong. The thought police will eventually catch him, but he continues to do what he wants until he gets caught. So, although the thought police intimidate people into doing the right thing, people sometimes do wrong while knowing the risks.

Hayley, your post uncovers some good points about law enforcment in Oceania. Adding to your summary, I also think that these special forces don't just control what they do, but what they believe. The government plays a big role in controlling things such as too minutes hate, giving residents specific jobs, and the different ministries. Overall I think that the points you bring are very true in regards to the book.

I do strongly agree that the government is trying to contol them from doing any bad in their state of Oceania. What I do not agree with is when you say, "By watching everyone nothing bad will ever happen." I don't agree with this because there are actually things that go on that the goverment cannot control from their people from doing. Thier state cannot be "crime-free" or perfect. I also do not agree when you say, "There is never any bad in Oceania." I do not agree with this because there is actually a lot of bad going on in Oceania. Do you not think what the government is doing to their people is bad enough?
